Brewster McCracken, a mayoral candidate in Austin,  has an online ad holding St. Louis up of an example of what Austin and other cities should never become.

He used pictures of blighted, run down neighborhoods as the ‘St. Louis’ model, while holding the ‘Austin Model’ up as one of prosperity.

In an effort to score political points and scare voters, he cherry picked statistics and photos to attempt to make his point.

The response…

  4. President Reed,

I follow you on Twitter and I appreciate all the work you do BUT…Brewster is dead on and we need to face up to the cold hard facts. I wanted to move into the City but with four kids, I couldn’t afford private school as public education is in shambles. I would love for the City and County to reunite because that’s the only way this City can make a comeback.

    Keep up the good fight!

  5. My friend loved the mention to Metro (school). Her daughter is enrolled in the Fall and they are thrilled.

  6. I don’t think that St.Louis is as bad as McCracken makes it out to be. Our public school system is failing, but that’s a problem not faced only by St.Louis. Public schools all over the country are failing (And No Child Left Behind is not a helpful policy). I’m glad that Lewis Reed responded to McCracken’s commercial.

John I appreciate your comments and thank you for following @presreed.

I understand where you are coming from on the school situation. The problems with our school system are difficult, but I don’t think Brewster was referring to just one aspect of St. Louis.

He portrayed our entire region as failing. His statement about the “St. Louis” model portrayed a region headed in the wrong direction and I just don’t believe that’s true.

I see great things happening everyday. I see new development and strong communities. Do we have problems? sure, but St. Louis is looking up and moving forward.

Thanks for commenting and don’t be a stranger.
