Festival of Nations 2009
The International Institute of St. Louis welcomed over 100,000 people this weekend to Tower Grove Park for the 10th annual Festival of Nations. Over 70 ethnic groups demonstrated their talent, culture and food to the people of St. Louis.
The International Institute, which also celebrated its 90th Anniversary, welcomed 32 booths that were selling everything from Israeli jewelry to Indian saris. People also had the opportunity to travel the world of food. 39 different countries from Argentine to Senegalese offered their own unique cultural tastes.
As the elected officials including Congressman Russ Carnahan, Mayor Francis Slay, President of the Board of Aldermen Lewis Reed, Alderwoman Jennifer Florida, Webster University’s Dr. Benjamin Akate emphasized diversity and culture that make St. Louis strong.
The festival was also filled with activity. The five performance stages were filled with dance and music including Doorei Traditional Korean Drumming, Merengue, Brazilian Samba, Irish Dance, Clogging, and Kung Fu. Scottish and Gaelic culture were also represented through the cabor toss and as the video below shows weight toss.
This event demonstrated clearly the very diverse community in St. Louis. The music, dance, and food allowed people to experience the world right here in the City of St. Louis.
