Artist Mark Swain Displays Art at City Hall

By Mary Miller Cullins

Local artist Mark Swain has pieces of his artwork on display at St. Louis’ City Hall.  You can visit city hall and check out Mark’s colorful works in the Leisure Room at the Board of Aldermen on the second floor.  At the age of eight, Mark Swain would accompany his father to his job as groundskeeper at Forest Park.  For hours he would sit by the waterfall and draw.  Today, he continues to interpret the world around him through many artistic ways.  His talents include music, floral design, and jewelery in addition to painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture.

Mark is of Native American descent and walks “the Red Road” observing native American traditions and sacred ways.  His intense love of the natural world, his fluency with mystical experiences, and his awareness that “everything is alive” lend depth and intensity to his pieces.

Mark’s Native ancestry informs his artistic vision, and in particular, his brilliant works in leather.  You can feel the presence of the spirits of his Native elders through his powerful pieces.

Mark is also very active in his neighborhood.  Currently, Mark serves in the Board for Dutchtown South and will soon take over as President of the Mount Pleasant Neighborhood Association.  For more information on his work visit www.buffalomoonarts.weebly.com and feel free to visit city hall over the next few months to see his artwork up close and personal!
