Go Crazy Folks-It’s Opening Day!
By Mary Miller Cullins
If you’ve lived in St. Louis for any length of time, it’s likely you’ve caught the fever, baseball fever, that is. The Cardinals have won over 9,300 ballgames, 11 World Series Championships, 18 National League Pennants, 3 National League Eastern Division Titles, and 9 National League Central Division Titles.
There are over forty former Cardinal players and managers enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame Museum in Cooperstown, New York.
The Cardinals bring more than 3 million fans downtown each year, with more than a million coming from outside Missouri. On game day, there are about 3,000 employees at Busch Stadium.
After last year’s exciting season, Cardinal Nation is ready for 2012. “12 in 12″ has been the chant since last year’s victory parade! Although we said goodbye to Albert and Tony the future looks bright for the Redbirds. The cards haven’t even played a home game yet and are already 5 and 2!
Stan Musial, Lou Brock, Dizzy Dean, Rogers Hornsby, Mark McGwire, Ted Simmons, Bruce Sutter, Enos Slaughter, Curt Flood, Keith Hernandez, and Yadi Molina; names forever etched in the hearts of baseball fans. The list of Cardinal greats seems endless, as does waiting for today’s first pitch!
Busch Stadium is shining and waiting for thousands of fans to arrive. The team has already won two “opening day” games, now it’s time to do it in our house! GO CARDS!!!!
“I’ve been thinking about baseball almost as long as I’ve been thinking.”
