City Bistro Is Open For Business
By Mary Miller Cullins
Most southsiders remember 2718 Gravois as Mary’s Fine Foods, the tavern with the best fried chicken in town. Recently remodeled and re-opened, the re-named City Bistro is ready for hungry customers and old patrons to come in and check them out! As a long time customer of Mary’s, I was curious how the ‘ol place looked inside. You could tell work was being done inside and out over the past year or so. About a month ago a sign went up saying they were open for lunch. Last week, my curiosity got the best of me, so I went in to check it out and grab a bite to eat.
I was stunned to walk in and see the “new” place. The bar has been remodeled and expanded, and the dining area seems much larger too. Next to the front door is a stage. Live music will also be added to the “menu” within the next few weeks. Blues and Motown will be the featured music.
Onto the food menu! The City Bistro offers appetizers, salads, and a wide variety of sandwiches for lunch. You’ll find chicken wings, a staple in St. Louis bar food, but they also offer a shrimp appetizer and buffalo wing dip to get your taste buds soaring. Loaded tots are a customer favorite already, piled high on the plate and topped with cheese, ranch dressing, and bacon! (It was so good, you felt guilty)!
Tiffany, our waitress, suggested the special for lunch. Pork wings with homemade coleslaw and potato salad for $7.50. What’s a pork wing, you ask? Well, although it looks more like a chicken leg to me, a pork wing is the fat part of the rib and it just falls right off the bone. This is a good choice for those of you who love pork steaks and ribs. The meat is smoked all day, then cooked for 2 hours in the oven. Before serving, the meat is tossed in a skillet to give it a nice crisp coat. This will be a signature specialty at the City Bistro.
Personally, I can’t resist a good burger. I went with the Inside Out Cheddar Bacon Cheeseburger! The 1/2 pound burger was excellent. It was juicy and just loaded inside with cheese and bacon. Served with a side of onion rings it was the perfect combo!
The City Bistro will deliver to businesses in a two mile radius and they are now open for lunch and dinner. The new owner, Earl Welch, did a great job improving this south city tavern that was once known for its chicken. The Fox Park Neighborhood Association is excited to see the City Bistro open for business! Go in and check out the new look and the new menu. Who knows, you might even see an old friend or make a new one!
