Baby It’s Cold Outside

By Mary Miller Cullins

Waking up this morning, it felt like January in St. Louis is supposed to feel, ice cold!

It started to seem like we were going to get by with a mild winter here in the Lou.  Until today.  When the sun is shining, but your hands freeze to the steering wheel anyway, you know ‘ol man winter has arrived.  The Anglo-Saxons called the first month Wolfmonth because wolves came into the villages in winter to search for food.  In Czech this month is called Leden, meaning ice month.

January, the first month of the year in Julian and Gregorian calendars is named after Janus, the god of doors and gates.  He was chosen for January because when you start something new, symbolically you pass through a door.  The head of Janus is usually portrayed with two faces. One face looks forward and the other looks back.

January, on average, is the coldest month of the year within most of the Northern hemisphere.  The birthstone for January is garnet and the snowdrop is generally regarded as January’s flower, but for some it’s the carnation.  The zodiac signs for January is Capricorn (12/22-1/19) and Aquarius (1/20-2/18).

No matter what the sign, flower, motto, or gem is for January, here in St. Louis there’s only one thing that really matters: you need to bundle up because….

“Baby, It’s COLD outside”!!!!
